A Day in Rabat

Today’s post written by Amy

We started our morning bright and early when at 12:30 am we were awoken by fireworks, honking horns and cheers.  We found out in the morning that Morocco had won a very important soccer match, the African cup.

We had breakfast at the hotel ( a wonderful array of bread and pastry, egg, coffee and fresh juice). And then headed out for a walk around Rabat.

Our first stop was to see a Mosque that was built in the 1200s that unfortunately destroyed in an earthquake in 1600s. The Mosque was in the same area as the King Mohamed V  Mausoleum, where we were able to go inside and see the current King’s grandfather, father and brother’s tombs (picture with the Royal Guard below)

We then walked through a fort where we encountered many stray cats, Aladdin-like walkways, and some of the most beautiful, Instagram worthy doorways.

Next was a walk through the medina, which was filled with just about every type of vendor.  Some beautiful clothes, leather bags, shoes, and more.

Lunch brought even more delicious fresh juice.  I’ve never had such delicious juice before.  For lunch I opted for kiwi, but our group had everything from lemon/ginger to papaya.  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1JthKijbdDR1M8PNpH3xHSnJ5Buq0-hvO

Next we were on our way to Azrou, a three hour trip.  But first a pit stop at the pottery village to see many of the beautiful items, pottery more!https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1hO1uEys0oGepK5LEzOD7A35KHzz94Elh

Once to Azrou, we checked into our new guest house (picture below) , which will be our base for the rest of our stay. We met Khadiga who generously welcomed us into her home and cooked a delicious dinner (again, with fresh juice, peach/nectarine). We learned from Khadiga that bread is sacred in Morocco and it doesn’t get thrown away, instead it gets put in a separate container and placed outside for those that need it or to give to animals.

17,000+ steps later we are now settling in until tomorrow!
